Reduce Points on Your Driving Record

Too many New York traffic tickets will rack up points on your driving record, and before you know it you'll have a suspended license.

Driver Training Associates offers a hassle-free New York online defensive driving course, which can reduce up to four (4) points on your driving record for tickets received within the previous 18 months. The course will not reduce points from before that time period.

Points for New York Traffic Tickets

Issuance of a New York traffic ticket will result in the following number of points on your driving record.

Speeding (1-10 MPH over posted limit) 3
Speeding (11-20 MPH over posted limit) 4
Speeding (21-30 MPH over posted limit) 6
Speeding (31-40 MPH over posted limit) 8
Speeding (more than 40 MPH over posted limit) 11
Reckless driving 5
Failure to stop for a school bus 5
Following too closely (tailgating) 4
Inadequate brakes 4
Inadequate brakes (while driving employer's vehicle) 2
Failing to yield right-of-way 3
Violation involving traffic signal, stop sign, or yield sign 3
Railroad crossing violation 3
Improper passing or lane use 3
Safety restraint violation involving person under 16 3
Any other moving violation 2

Making Sure Points Have Been Reduced on Your Record

The best way you can be absolutely sure the DMV reduced your points is by requesting a copy of your driving record. You will need to complete a "Request for Driver and / or Vehicle Record Information" (form MV-15), which can be picked up from any motor vehicle office location or downloaded from the the DMV internet office.
