Drug and Alcohol Driving
Awareness Program
Texas courts are currently ordering many Texans with
drug and alcohol-related offenses to attend the Texas
Health Department's drug and alcohol education courses.
The Texas Legislature recently adopted new laws that
provide for a Drug and Alcohol Driving Awareness Program
(DADAP), such as the one being offered on this website,
to be used along with or in lieu of the courses offered
by the Health Department.
Texas Court Ordered Attendance
It is up to the discretion of the court to authorize
the completion of the Drug and Alcohol Driving Awareness
Program. Individuals convicted of drug or alcohol-related
offenses can check with their Texas court to find out
if they are eligible to attend the Drug and Alcohol
Driving Awareness Program for this purpose.
Insurance Discount
The Drug and Alcohol Driving Awareness Program can also
be used to obtain a 5% Texas automobile insurance discount.
In fact, Texas law (76[R] HB 3757) authorizes a mandatory
5% automobile insurance discount for any Texas driver
who completes the Drug and Alcohol Driving Awareness
Program. The Drug and Alcohol Driving Awareness Program
has been approved for this purpose by the Texas Education
Agency.
Here's an added bonus attached to the Drug and Alcohol
Driving Awareness Program: a Texas driver who completes
a 32-hour Driver's Education Course or a 6-hour Driving
Safety Course is eligible for a 10% automobile insurance
discount, plus an additional 5% discount if he or she
completes the Drug and Alcohol Driving Awareness Program.
This amounts to a total insurance discount of 15%!
