Florida Introduction to U.S. Transportation System (ITS) Course Details

The Introduction to the U.S. Transportation System course was developed to address the specific needs of the growing immigrant populations throughout the United States. In most cases, the immigrant possesses the knowledge to operate a motor vehicle in accordance with the requirements of the jurisdiction in which he or she was licensed.

Historically, most driver education programs for the immigrant driver were geared toward comprehensive behind-the-wheel training, along with a classroom component that was designed for use in the public school sector. We at DTA recognize that this type of education requires a significant investment of time and money in a process that can be repetitive and unnecessary.

What Does the ITS Course Teach?

DTA's Introduction to the U.S. Transportation System differs from the conventional model by focusing on the key issues the immigrant driver must address in obtaining a license and ensuring his or her continued licensure in the United States:

  • Recognition and training in signs, signals, and markings that are specific to the United States transportation system.

  • Discussion and training in the fundamentals of the U.S. legal system, with special focus on the rights of the driver during a traffic stop, as well as the disposition options that are available to a driver who has received a citation.

  • Training in specific state statutory requirements related to driving, with the objective of the student passing the written examination for a driver license. As this training may be conducted in the customer's native language, the retention level is increased when compared to standard driver education programs.

  • Assessment of the customer's driving capability in the optional assessment program to determine a driver's suitability for proceeding to the licensing phase. Referral to approved driving education schools is offered for those persons who are deemed not to possess the requisite knowledge, skills, and ability to pass the driving examinations.
