Tips from DTA for Motorcycle Awareness and Safety

When many people think of driver improvement, they think about how to avoid crashes while driving a car or truck. This is understandable given the large volume of cars and light trucks on our nation's roads. However, the U.S. Department of Transportation reports that there are well over 5 million motorcycles drivers sharing those same roads every day with drivers of other vehicle types.

The increasing popularity of motorcycles and mopeds means that car and truck drivers need to be more aware of the presence of these smaller vehicles, which can be difficult to see when driving in a person's blind spot. DTA's driver improvement courses give useful tips and strategies for both motorcycle / moped operators AND car and truck drivers to follow.

Car and truck drivers should always physically turn their heads to see if a motorcycle is in their blind spot before changing lanes or passing. Don't just rely on your mirrors for this crucial information. The simple act of turning your head to look could save a life or prevent permanently disabling injuries.

Likewise, motorcycle riders should always signal when changing lanes, keep a sufficient space cushion around their vehicle, and watch the traffic around them to ensure that their presence is noted. Excessive speeding, weaving in and out of traffic, and "hot dogging" are all dangerous behaviors that a safe motorcycle operator does not engage in.
